Here is a great way to minimise nervousness in any situation. You can use this approach for exams, speeches, business presentations or any other event that would normally make you nervous.
Have you ever watched someone give a presentation and thought, "I wish I had the confidence to do that, but I’m just too nervous!". Well, here is the real secret to developing an unstoppable sense of confidence…
Whether you are giving a speech or preparing for an exam, the first step is to imagine that your starting point is 100% nervousness and 0% confidence. Your ‘Confidence Graph’ therefore looks like this:
Now, every time you take action to prepare for your event, you convert some of your nervousness into confidence.
If you are preparing for a speech, then each practice run you deliver will convert your nervousness into confidence.
If you are studying for an exam, each set of practice questions you answer will convert your nervousness into confidence.
Every time you take action to prepare for your event, imagine your confidence graph changing. In your mind’s eye, see your nervousness decreasing and your confidence increasing.
Your goal should be to focus on your preparation to the point where you can say, “There is nothing more I can do to prepare for this exam, speech etc. When you reach this point, your confidence graph will look like this.
You will never completely elimnate nervousness, but that last 5% is a great way to always make sure you are switched on and that you don’t become complacent.
Preparation really is the secret ingredient that transforms nervousness into confidence. When you are prepared, you no longer need to be nervous. Before your big event, just tell yourself,
“I am ready for this.”
Think back on your preparation, visualise your confidence graph transforming, and then go for it!
